What is ANSI View?
ANSI View is a DOS command-line utility similar to XCOPY or MOVE
that displays ANSI coded images on your computer screen. It
does this with no assistance from ANSI device drivers such as
ANSI.SYS that is included with most versions of DOS. Those of
you that keep ANSI.SYS installed for viewing ANSI graphics can
now free your computer's memory from ANSI.SYS forever!
ANSI View has a broad range of features. ANSI View, by default,
will automatically detect the type of video hardware the host
computer contains and will configure itself accordingly. ANSI
View will automatically detect everything from VGA to monochrome
display adapters and will adjust itself for the best performance
on the detected equipment. ANSI View can also be forced to
display ANSI images using either color or black and white,
direct or BIOS screen writing methods.
Beyond its auto-configuration capabilities, ANSI View is one of
fastest programs available to display ANSI coded images with!
For this reason, command-line switches are available that can be
used to adjust the speed of ANSI View from its lightning fast
default to a "slow-as-a-snail" pace (useful for following ANSI
animation with great detail).
ANSI View can also be configured through command-line switches
to display a prompt and then to return the user's keystroke to
the calling program by way of setting the errorlevel. This
feature is particularly useful to batch language programers who
create menu systems using DOS's batch language. A sample menu
is provided to demonstrate this feature.
Who needs a memory-resident program hogging system resources and
causing problems? Try ANSI View! It's only there when you need
it.
